Why it exists

The SAPS enquiry page is public and it works. It's also terse: a status in capitals, a date, and a line or two of official wording. It doesn't say where that step sits in the process, how long it usually lasts, or whether you need to do anything.

What the official page gives you

The status, the date it was last attended to, a short description and the next step, in SAPS's own words. SAPS doesn't publish a legend explaining them.

What we add

Which of the steps your application is on, who has your file, what usually happens there, and what you can do. With sources, so you can see how sure we are.

How a lookup works

No ID number, no login to SAPS, nothing you couldn't do yourself on the SAPS website.

  1. You type your reference number

That's all we ask for, plus your firearm's serial number if you choose to add it. We never ask for your ID number.

  2. We ask the public SAPS page

Our server sends those details to the SAPS firearm enquiry page, the same way it works when you use it yourself.

  3. We explain the answer

You see SAPS's own wording exactly, plus the step it's on and what that means. If SAPS shows something new to us, we show it as it is.

What we will never do

These are the lines we hold, in every version of this site.

  • Pretend to be SAPS, or use SAPS logos or crests.
  • Sell your data, or share it with anyone except the SAPS enquiry page that answers your check.
  • Ask for your ID number.
  • Make up a status, or present a guess as a SAPS answer.
  • Promise how long SAPS will take. We show official targets and reported times, and label which is which.

Independence

We are not SAPS Firearm Tracker is an independent service. We are not part of, or endorsed by, the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Central Firearms Register or any government department. Statuses come from the public SAPS firearm enquiry page, and SAPS remains the only official source. Our guides are general information, not legal advice.
